Director Josh Brody and studentsAbout Sequoyah

Director's Message
What should a school be? At Sequoyah, children engage in the search for answers, and are encouraged through their questioning to imagine what is possible. Here, students gain experiences and skills that help them pose meaningful questions about themselves, their relationships, their communities, and their world.

I invite you to look through the pages of this web site to get a sense of our vibrant, diverse learning community. When you step onto the campus, you will see for yourself the liveliness of Sequoyah School. You'll see collaboration between students within the multi-age classroom, and just as often between students from older and younger classes who are given structured opportunities to work and learn together. You could visit an exhibition where students put on creative presentations that demonstrate answers to the essential questions they have asked in relation to a unit of study, and the enduring understandings that they gain through their project-based learning. You may sit in on a session of student government, where students make decisions in concert with their teachers and administrators that affect the life of the school. I expect you will notice what I see when I walk through campus: the deep level of student engagement.

Sequoyah teachers challenge students to be creative, idealistic and practical both in the classroom and out in the community. Curricula and activities are often specific to the particular attributes of the school and its surroundings. Teachers integrate subject matter and help students examine the geography, ecology, cultures, and politics of the places they live and those they explore in the school's field studies program. Recognizing connections between place, self and community helps students see the relevance of the material they study and empowers them to live out Sequoyah's core value of Stewardship: To take care of people, take care of things, take care of the environment and seek to make the community a better place for all. Sequoyah is a school community that cares deeply about children and who they grow up to be in the world. We'd love for you to arrange a visit.
